"It took quite some time to figure out the best way to represent a Taula"

"I spent many days visiting nearly every archaeological site on the island of Menorca, immersed in those ancient structures where stone was the sole element and the Taula its ultimate expression.

However, it took quite some time to envision the best way to represent a Talaiotic Taula (and, more generally, the T-shape of megalithic Dolmens). The figurative approach, which had always been my standard mode of representation, did not seem sufficiently interesting and felt perhaps too literal; I needed an effective synthesis that resonated with me while simultaneously capturing the subject's essence.

I had produced various sketches, none particularly convincing, until one August afternoon—after making yet more sketches—I realized I had found the solution I was seeking. Two vertical elements supporting a horizontal one: what more direct representation could I have conceived? Perhaps the key I was looking for was precisely this: how to apply the synthesis of structural elements to the pictorial space. I wanted my Taulas to express a kind of authority—to appear ancient, commanding, and heavy—and for each to possess its own individual soul.

That synthesis of lines and forms was the starting point for an intense exploration that continues to this day."
